Sportswoman of the Year Finalist – Ameliaranne Ekenasio

How did you get into your sport?

I started playing netball just for fun because all my friends played. It wasn’t until I realised I was about a foot taller than everybody else and I learned to catch and pass then I started to actually really like this game and finally I have a good thing going on that being tall is good for.

What was your greatest achievement this year?

My great achievement this year wasn’t winning the grand final for ANZ because that really was the icing on the cake on top of a whole heap of hard work on and off court mentally and physically. My biggest achievement was doing all of this at the same time as raising two beautiful boys. Also being selected to go to the World Cup is really special as well.

What advice would you give a young athlete?

If I could give any advice to a young athlete I’d say three things.

1. Find the fun in everything you do – whether it’s training or a game you have to learn to enjoy it this is where every single battle is won because when we smile we are winning before we even think we are

2. Try new things – playing lots of different sports is good here because you learn lots of skills that you can use.

3. Be ready to train hard – the fitter you are the easier lots of things will be but with this eating really well to have lots of energy will be the best you can do for yourself. The hard you train the better you should want to eat as well. They work together.
